Greetings to all sisters and brothers of Harrisburg", Whether or not you know me personally I hope by the end of this you can at least relate to some of the things I’ll speak about as a lifelong Harrisburg citizen, and see why I’m so passionate to help. My name is Roslyn Copeland and I was born and raised in the city of Harrisburg. I am a : child of God, a daughter, a sister, a wife, and the mother of three loving children. Growing up in this great city I’ve had the privilege to learn so much; some lessons came by choice, others came by force but I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world. My greatest and most treasured trial, triumph and lesson being my journey as a mother.
As a young mother, like many of you, I raised my children in love and loved seeing them at their best. While we were living in poverty, struggling and surviving I watched my children grow and learn. And as they did, so did my awareness of just how unresponsive our current system is to their unique paths. My first encounter with this began with my oldest child when I was told my son had a learning disability. Being so hands on I had a hard time connecting what they were telling me with the bright young boy I was experiencing. So I did what any good mother would do and got a second opinion.... and then a third... and then a fourth. Upon the last meeting I was told from the psychologist we brought in to consult that my son was actually very advanced and did not have a learning disability—he just needed an academic challenge. We caught it in time and he finished the year out strong and ultimately was admitted into a more rigorous program. But after the second guessing and fighting was over I came to the realization that this is something that’s happening to children all over the district.
The work that I did for my son: the advocacy for his right to an education that saw, respected and supported his personal path is something every child should have—and its the work and I want to do for you and your children. I’m sure we’ve all seen the end game of a child with no education and direction in life and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that this pandemic has nearly destroyed our education system. During this period of survival and the coming period of rebuilding we are holding our children’s futures in our hands. Our district's future will be defined by the actions we take now, so I ask you to partner with me during this process so that when we rebuild, and we will rebuild, it won’t be to continue business as usual. Let’s come together to build something bigger and better—let’s come together to create a system that cradles the unique genius of every single child. To do this I’m counting on you, my neighbors and friends, my coworkers in this community to vote for me for school board so that we can create a kinder future for our children.
For the People
In reuniting Harrisburg TOGETHER.
As a graduate of Harrisburg High school I received my diploma with the class of 2002. During my time spent there I focused on my academic studies in Honors Courses. I became a very active students in sports, where I was awarded 1995-96 Most Dependable Band Front Member and received the Track & Field 1999 Girls Conference Championship Achievement Award.
I continued on with my education at Kaplan Career Institute where I received a Diploma in Medical Billing & Coding Specialist in 2010. As I do with everything I set my mind to I give it my all. This consistent sense of pride in which I choose to serve lead me to being awarded-2010 Excellence on Externship at Hamilton Health Center completed in Foose Elementary School. I currently employe the knowledge I have obtained to serve as a contractor with the Department of Human Services both as a Medical Lead and Financial Representative.
Personal development and self accountability are the core values that have lead me to pursue opportunities that allow me to not only serve my community but grow as an individual. Therefore completing courses on Self Determination Housing of PA in 2020 and Getting Ahead course in 2020 at
Tri County Community Action were right in alignment with who I Am.
As a member of The Gospel Fellowship Church I became the Coordinator for The Spider outreach for Homeless in Harrisburg. This position allowed me to see how much my city needed ME. As an Alumni of Harrisburg High School, I was very dishearten at the path MY city had taken over the years and the treatment of my children in the school system and city I hold so dear to my heart. The passion I have for my city HARRISBURG, PA has now lead me to stepping into my roll as an active dedicated citizen by starting a business in the city with my family named “Star's of Five construction LLC. I also served as a tenant support volunteer advocating for families facing evictions with the Greater Harrisburg Tenants United- GHTU services and co-manage a Food Bank Collaboration with Gospel fellowship church & Macedonia Missionary Baptist church. As of recently we have obtained began to host Christian Church United of Tri County Area’s overnight Shelter For Men at my church.
I believe these opportunities have crafted me to be a valuable resource and contributing member of the school board committee. With the knowledge experience and relationships I have gained I know we as a community are prepared and ready to stand together stronger then ever before. Focusing on leading OUR children by example with community partnerships, a safe clear plan for a COVID safe return to school and resources for supporting mental health concerns with coping to the new era.
